The Problem With Our Parks

Greatly inspired by Edward Abbey's classic environmentalist text Desert Solitaire, this project seeks to interrogate the ways in which industrial tourism impedes the experience of national parks.
It does so by putting excerpts of Desert Solitaire in conversation with The Crystal Goblet, Beatrice Warde's seminal essay on the merits of typographic restraint. The book draws the two texts together with marginalia that highlight intersections and parallelisms. It also features original illustrations, created in a simple style and overlaid with refined National Park photography, to highlight how careless development impedes the experience of natural beauty.
